Here we go, my first Substack
Allow me to reintroduce myself...
Hello, I am writing this from my desk in my house in Brighton, its pouring with rain, the room I am in has a flat roof so I don’t need the rain sounds I usually use when I am trying to get my ideas down. I will start with the facts, my name is Suzi Jaclyn Ruffell, I am 39 which I recently learnt is the beginning of middle age. I live with my wife, our daughter and a 16 week old Whippet puppy called Tiggy, named after a character in the Seven Sisters books. Alice (my aforementioned wife) and I have just got in from a very soggy beach walk, Tiggy refused to walk for a lot of it so I carried her. Yes I am a bit of a push over. Its something I am working on but I couldn’t ignore her sad wet face or her dramatic little shivers.
I wanted to start this Substack to share my thoughts on culture, queer life, fashion and life on the road. I am a touring comedian by trade. Travelling all over this country and sometimes further afield to sell my wares (jokes). I love being a comic, its a joy to make people laugh for a living. Also I think the adrenaline is addictive and I am far to disorganised to have any sort of proper job.
Last week I travelled to Durham, Newcastle and Lincoln to perform my new show The Juggle, it’s a show about trying to be the person my little girl thinks I am. She has the highest opinion of me of anyone in this world and I am doing my best to keep that up for as long as possible until the inevitable happens and she realises I am just a person trying her best, having a go and quite often fucking up. This week I play Brighton twice and Southend.
You can see where else I am heading on tour here.
I am also a podcaster, I co host a weekly podcast Like Minded Friends with my brilliant friend Tom Allen, I also have a women’s football podcast with another great friend Maisie Adam called Big Kick Energy and I will soon be bringing back my podcast Out with Suzi Ruffell, an interview show where I interview queer luminaries about how they live their most authentic lives.
My debut book came out this year Am I Having Fun Now? Anxiety, Applause and Life Big Questions Answered, its a memoir about living thriving with anxiety. It was an instant Sunday Times Bestseller and the response to me spilling my guts on the page seems to have resonated with lots of people which has been amazing and a little overwhelming to be honest.
Next week I am looking forward to sharing an extract from my book on here.
Please subscribe so you don’t miss it.
Until then,
Suzi x

Yaaaay! This is the lovely gentle substack we alllll need right now. Keep going, Suzi! <3 love from Canada
The tour, book, and big kick pod is banging. I mean, I’m sure it’s all fab but those are the ones that I can personally vouch for. Even if you don’t like the pizza at the Emirates…
